The Streamlight Sidewinder Compact LED Flashlight is the ultimate in personal and tactical lights. The Sidewinder is constructed of super tough, high impact nylon for durability and weather resistance. It includes a bright white C4 LED light, an infrared LED light, a red LED light, and a blue LED light for increased functionality. Customer Review: NOT a tactical light, but unbeatable utility light

I received this as a gift and I'm immensely pleased with it. The light levels are very useful:
- White/low is plenty of light to find something at close range, white/high gives you good distance illumination.
- Blue/low is bright (enough to affect night vision IMHO) but a good compromise between white and red.
- Red/low is dim enough to not affect night vision in complete darkness.
- IR/low and high are dim, not really meant for illumination, but rather for signaling. IR/flash is a very clear beacon to IR goggles.
Ease of use is excellent: press button for low, double-tap button for flash, press and hold to cycle through the four power levels. The knob used to switch colors locks positively and is impossible to change on accident. It has a very obvious protrusion so you can switch to white or IR in complete darkness with no fuss; I forget which side red/blue are on, but I know I can easily pick *one* of them in the dark and neither will trash my night vision. Overall, the combination of controls is so simple that you can't mess it up, even under stress.
The rotating head and clip make this light trivially easy to attach to a belt or MOLLE vest. I also hold it in my mouth -- not the most comfortable, but works in a pinch.
Durability seems excellent. I haven't abused mine too much yet, but based on the build quality I see no reason why it couldn't stand up to a lot of abuse.
As for its billing as a "tactical" light: I don't agree. Based on its design it's clearly not meant as a tactical/combat light. Specifically:
- It has no momentary-on, you can't do a quick flash and move.
- It starts at low light setting, takes a second or two to get to high.
- Double-tap for flash would be unrealistic in combat.
Use another light as your primary combat light. The Sidewinder is meant for everything else. Thanks to the Sidewinder's tremendous utility, I have it near me almost all the time. Need to get another one, in fact. For work or signaling it can't be beat.
