Tools and Hardware Reviews of Streamlight 65018 Stylus 6-1/4-Inch Penlight with Pocket Clip and White LED, BlackCustomer Review: Great Little Light Summary: 5 Stars
This is really a terrific light. It uses LED technology which tells you the following. The "bulb" is virtually unbreakable and appears to have an unbelievable work life (can you believe 100,000 hours). Run that on your pocket calculator see what that comes to in days and years.
Next, even though the LED burns with a pure white brilliance, it is cool to the touch. This is the light I let my 7 year old niece use. Because LEDs draw little power compared to the light they put out, they don't need large batteries. The battery size is AAAA. This allows for a very light weight tool.
If you need both hands free, you can hold this light in your mouth for a long time because of the light weight (no pun!) It also remains in your pocket forever without drawing attention to itself because of its size.
Also of great importance is that this is not just a toy(even though it is fun!) It is a real working tool. I am a physician and this is my little exam light. It works great at examining eyes and throats. You may find it useful in dozens of situations. Because of its size it can go everywhere- home, car, shirt or jacket pocket, purse or briefcase and so on. There are also different colored bulbs for specialty applications I won't go into here.
One of the complaints I have seen is regarding the AAAA batteries. First of all, the batteries last for a very long time because of the low power drain. You may never change the batteries. Secondly, the batteries are freely available at Walgreens which seem to be everywhere these days. They are in the specialty battery section with the hearing aid and photo batteries.I occasionally check and I have always found the AAAA's in stock.
The major limitation is that even though it puts out a lot of light for its size, it is a "pen light". If you need to light a whole room up you will need a bigger light.
Bottom line- this is a really great light. For the price, you can purchase several and leave them wherever you might need them.
LED technology is revolutionizing flashlights in the 21ST century and these lights are classical demonstrations of advanced technology. They do more things:put out more light, use less electrical power, weigh less, are less likely to break, and cost less. Enjoy!
Customer Review: Impressive Summary: 5 Stars
Wow. This thing is bright. I actually bought this for testing ocular reflexes, but I'm a little bit afraid to use it on my patients (the package actually warns: "AVOID DIRECT EYE EXPOSURE").
It's a little long, but fits into a shirt pocket (or lab coat) fine. Solidly constructed. I haven't tried throwing it against a wall, but I think it would survive. The LED sticks out, so you could possible break that easily. I would recommend keeping the glare guard on (plastic sleeve that fits around the end of the light and shields the lateral edges of the bulb). Two convenient ways to turn it on: push button that you have to hold; or turn the cap and it will stay on. I just got it, so I can't comment on battery life. When I first received it, I immediately wrote a review saying that the light is very white. After having used it to look inside people's mouths, it's actually slightly bluish (it is more obvious when you use it to look at pinks/reds).
How does it compare to similar lights?
Coast Cutlery V16: nowhere near as bright as the Streamlight--but the Streamlight is almost twice as long, twice as thick, and weighs about three times as much.
Coast Cutlery V9: short (half as long as Streamlight) and stubby (about 50% wider), and maybe a little heavier than the Streamlight. Its light is pretty good, but still not up to the Streamlight's (its size is perfect for key chains though).
Eveready pen light: about the same thickness as the V9, but about twice as long. This is the heaviest of the bunch (probably because of the battery type--2 AAA's). It is not as sturdy as the others; but, as long as you don't do anything extreme, it will probably last you until the incandescent bulb dies. It is second in brightness to the Streamlight. Its light is much warmer in color temperature due to the incadescent bulb.
Overall, I would recommend the Streamlight over any of the others based on its incredible light output. If you want a key chain light, then I would recommend the Coast Cutlery V9 (or one of their other key chain varieties).
Customer Review: Bright Led Penlight Summary: 5 Stars
This pen light is made by Streamlight. This is the world famous company that also makes the ULTRASTINGER by far the most affordable brightest flashlight made to date. The penlight is of single led design and the light output is clearer and brighter than the famous AA mini-mag light. The penlight is very durrable I use mine daily in a metal foundry and the battery life is extremly long. The batteries are AAAA so that makes them a little hard to find but they are out there. The flashlight takes three batteries so keep that in mind when you are buying spares. The flashlight comes with batteries in it so you set for a while. I have bought four of these lights and I keep then in my car's and also carry one on me at all times along with my Gerber. If you slide it along side of the Gerber the nylon pouch will hold them both just fine and the light is tough enough so no damage will come of it. I belive that streamlight also stands behind there products 100% percent so if you do damage it just call them up for replacement or warranty info. This penlight is a very good buy and Amazon seams to have them for cheepiest on the web. There are several colors available and even UV. The White light is very bright and clear. I highly recommend this penlight to be carried with you and to keep one where ever you might need a good light.
Customer Review: Fits in pen pocket Summary: 5 Stars
I carried keychain flashlights for decades. They always ended up getting broken when I dropped my keys on the floor. But the most annoying thing about keychain flashlights is they are bulky. Even the really tiny ones that don't seem like they would take up much room. Believe me, when you are carrying a big set of keys, that tiny keychain flashlight starts feeling bulky the more you carry it. Add to the fact that it is difficult to use a keychain flashlight with so many keys on it. So I was thrilled to find they make flashlights the size of a pen. My uniform has pen pockets in the arm and the Streamlight Stylus fits perfectly. The clip is strong and has not fallen out even after lifting my arm overhead. Now I have one less thing in my pants pocket because I don't have to carry a keychain flashlight anymore. I read on the reviews here about some people complaining about the size of the stylus being too big. It is only a quarter inch longer than a standard bic pen. The diameter is a milimeter wider. For people complaining about the length of this flashlight, get the Stylus Pro. It is a lot shorter, but also a great deal wider. I think this non pro version is the perfect size because the Stylus Pro is way too wide and I don't think it will fit in my pen pocket.
Customer Review: A clear outperformer Summary: 5 Stars
I planned on purchasing a Maglite Solitaire, but ended up choosing Streamlight's 65018 Stylus White LED Pen Light, having read the tepid Amazon reviews for the former, and the enthusiasm for the latter.
This product is ingeniously designed and sturdy (the body is made of metal). The light emitted is surprisingly powerful, given the small size. "LED light" means that it propagates a white, halogen light: it is much more powerful than regular flashlights.
It comes with a belt clip, a pierced cap if you need a focused beam, rather than a 360 degrees light (candle-style). By default, the light turns on by pressing one end of the pen, and turns off by releasing it. This is very handy for quick needs of light, like on your bedside (the reason I originally purchased this pen light).
For those concerned about this kind of thing, this pen light is assembled in the US - not in China, for once.
I had high expectations before receiving this product from Amazon. They are well surpassed, now that I have held and used this pen light. Overall, an amazingly practical product, especially for the price. I plan on purchasing a couple more: one for the car (maps and parking slips come to mind), and another one for my toolbox.
