Tools and Hardware Reviews of Streamlight 66118 Stylus Pro Black LED Pen Flashlight with HolsterCustomer Review: An Upgrade from the Stylus Classic Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Stylus Pro as an EDC (Everyday Carry) light when a job change meant I would be more often in a suit than jeans. I needed something small, powerful and reliable. I had considered buying another Stylus (Classic) but frankly, though I want to like that light, it has several shortcomings that made me look for an alternative.
The Stylus Pro answers my objections well and adds a much more modern emitter/reflector system. The original Stylus required oddball AAAA sized cells. Rare and expensive, they were also very low capacity. In addition, the lack of a voltage boost convertor meant requiring 3, and so made the Stylus quite long. The fatter but shorter Pro uses common AAA batteries, and only wants 2 thanks to some modern electronics.
The switch on the original was very flaky. It made the entire light unreliable as it would get dirty, or, it would drain the battery when it was accidentally screwed down into the on position. The Pro has a real "clicky" switch which works in "tactical" mode (press and hold to light) or constant-on mode which does require a little more effort to achieve than might be ideal but it *never* accidentally turns on.
The original Stylus uses a single, standard 5mm LED. The quality of the LED has been variable (I have owned several). It has no reflector assembly, which, though it reduces the useful output of the flashlight also keeps the "nose" slim enough to poke into some places where other lights won't go. Often, the lower output isn't an issue in these cases. The Pro, on the other hand, while being *much* larger at the working end has a far, far better LED with a consistent white color and a well designed reflector to make the most of the photon producing power of it.
The Pro will work to light your way at night or inside of a piece of equipment equally well. The output is very usable for a broad range of tasks.
I carry the Stylus Pro every working day. It clips to the outer edge of my left-hand pants packet and is very discreet. Even with a suit it isn't noticeable (in black). It is short enough that I can carry other things in the pocket without clashing. The batteries last months at a time for me, and, I suspect, they would for most people. But, even if you use your flashlight for an hour a day, the AAA cells can be had in NiMH rechargeables to keep feeding the light cheap.
The bottom line on the Stylus Pro is that it's a fine product and an excellent, discreet, EDC light. It is unlikely that if you buy one it will end up sitting in a drawer, it's just too handy in your pocket and too easy to put there.
Pros
Bright, useable light for general use
Very easy to carry, excellent clip
Runs on AAA cells which are common and can be found as rechargeables
Has a reliable switch which offers one touch "tactical" or constant-on operation
Cons
Switch is a little hard to put into constant-on mode (operating pressure is higher than might be ideal)
Finish can "chip" but is generally very long wearing
Fatter than one might like, but this is an engineering trade-off that brings great benefits
